The Conclusion: Update 1.1 Released

The 1.1 update to Battle Brothers is here and brings a bunch of additions and changes, as well as various bugfixes – see below for the complete changelog. Also, we’re talking about what we’ll be doing next.

The Conclusion

Making Battle Brothers a reality has been a great ride. Back when we still worked our evenings and weekends on the game, we never imagined quite how many and how much people would fall in love with it, and all the support we’d get from you. Playing the game now ourselves, we’re genuinely happy with how things turned out. For all its flaws, Battle Brothers is fun to play, it’s satisfying to see what we achieved with our means, and we’re happy to say that we’ve learned a lot on game development as we created our first game together.

A part of game development is making tough decisions on where to spend your limited time. In creating Battle Brothers we, too, had to make concessions in order to make the game happen. Unfortunately, this now makes things like translations and mod support unfeasible, as much as we’d like to offer them, and expanding the game beyond its initial concept an increasingly unwieldy endeavour.

We’ve thought long and hard about where we want to go from here. After working on the same game for almost five years now, we’ve come to realize that it is time to move on. Creating Battle Brothers has always been about building the game we want to play ourselves, and furthering ourselves as game developers, and we believe that taking all the lessons learned here to create a new game dear to us is the right next step to take.

Development on Battle Brothers is concluded with today’s update – although we’ll of course continue to provide bugfixes, as necessary. We have a very good idea of the game we want to create next, and we’re enthusiastic to get started. It won’t be Battle Brothers 2, but if you enjoyed playing Battle Brothers, chances are good you’ll really enjoy our next game, too. We look forward to tell you all about it in the future. It’ll even have legs!

Sadness and excitement abound. As an avid BB addict, the only thing that could really have made a sizeable difference for me is multiplayer…. the game is too good for single-player only. If you look at mount & blade its the multiplayer that gave it longevity.

I look forward to this post-apocalyptic slog with rifles!

Hope you keep as great of a communication-pattern as you had in Battle Brothers, so far it really is one of the things which set you guys apart and I hope you have not lost the appetite/energy for it.

I bought the game a long time ago and was never disapointed made me sad .

Why not DLC we ALL would buy them and would expand the game further – i hope you will reconsider that because we love your game and to be honest — it does not seem fair for me ( us ).

Happy to hear about a new game and will also buy it – but i love our BB and we need more DLC for it !

    Please reconsider !

Yes, this is the most needed feature in my eyes. More immersive battlefields would add so much to this already great game.

I can only say that I fell like Asterix here, but, to stick with his example, M&B also had Mods. As you said that the train is gone for BB, it’s okay, but this game could have been a lot more if there had been MP & Mods.

I also have faint memories about doungeons being mentioned here, but never heard what happend to those. Shame really, I wish you best of luck on your next game.

I’m a little sad to see development come to an end, especially without mod support.

Nice job on BB, looking forward to the next game!

Excited to play battle brothers 1.1 and sad at the same time. Version 1.1 signals the end of battle brothers and i would have loved to ride this roll coaster for a longer time.
After approaching 900 hours of play, i cannot complain about the entertainment i have recieved. GOTY for me so far.

I really hope that teaser is not something xcom like, as there are so many games like that. Even the original Xcom maker is doing an xcom clone – phonixs point or something?.
And we dont care about legs! we like the chess piece approach.

Thanks for a great game and best of luck in the future.

Quite the ride. Excellent game, my first early access purchase and well worth it. What I’d love to see is some insight into the technical details of the game, would be fascinating.

5 years in development and then you quit development just 3 months after release? The proportions seem a bit off here.
There is still room to improve!
At least give us some painted armors to go with the new helmets please.

to be honest, this is the first time i’ve been disappointed by these devs. no mod support AND no dlcs? thats pretty lame guys. i get you want a break from it since you spent 5 years but still pretty lame. what if we as the community just threw a bunch of money at you guys to at least make a dlc happen? *cough HORSES cough*

Well, it seems this is how it ends (kinda).

Sure it’s a shame for no mod support, but well, what has once been said is true: It would have needed to be built with mod support in mind right from the beginning.
(Hm, well it’s more than a shame, it’s… just damn…)
BUT anyway, the game is awesome and fun to play and you guys are awesome and cool too.

Thank you guys, for this unique and amazing game. Huzzah! :)

    The next game will be:

    Cyber Brothers!

A cyberpunk setting, your band of mercenaries completes contracts for competing megacorporations. When you lose limbs/eyes/etc. in battle they can be replaced with improved cybernetic versions if you have enough funds. Let’s do this!

Quite disappointed, I wish the team well in your new project.

At the same time, I feel like you do owe the community for all the support you have gotten.
Please don’t leave a legacy for Battle Brothers as a great game that was abandoned too early.

A final outcome that would leave EVERYONE happy is possible. Please consider this. You want to walk away from Battle Brothers with both yourselves and the the majority of the community having a sense of sentimentality and fond memory but accepting of the need to move on….Not running to your next project and leaving your fan base behind asking for just a little more. Nobody reasonable is asking for Battle Brothers 2, but a measured and moderate content update would achievable and leave this title on good terms for everyone.

I’ve gotten 10+ times more enjoyment out of this game than what could be expected from a game made from this small a team. You’ve managed to make a better game than most studios with hundreds of people, and hundreds of thousands more dollars behind them, have ever been able to make, so I am in no shape or form sad that you’re gonna start putting your focus elsewhere now.

More than a 100 hours spendt on a game = more than enough bang for my buck, and tbh I’d rather have a completely new game, made with all the experiences you’ve gotten from making this game, than some DLC that would expand slightly on an already amazing game.

Thank you for probably one of the best games I’ve tried in 25+ years of gaming that just came out of nowhere. And keep up the amazing community response. That, on top of an amazing game in and of itself, is what made Battle Brothers a truly unique experience.

All the best to you guys! Looking forward to whatever is next :)

It’s a bit sad to hear no mod support or DLC to be arriving at all. However, I’m still thankful for the great game you guys have made and thanks for this good update. I think I can sympathize with you, the idea to start a new game seems completely reasonable. Working on something for 5 years, seeing yourselves grow into better developers may create urges within to see what you can come up with next. I for one am excited to see it and honestly, I can’t wait! Thanks again for the great game and wish you all the best. You can already mark me down for a pre-order on your next game! ;)

Hope you add “for now” to all of this and think again about BB DLC in year or so. Sure, there is a need to take a break from game being developed for 5 years, but abandoning it completely doesn’t sound good.
Good job anyway, looking forward to new stuff from you :)

You did a great job, realy! Thank you for this game. As many a saying here. Pleas make mods happen some way (does not to be workshop, maybe base codes will help), it will payout for you. Your fans will play this game for years and will always stay up to date with your projects. Keep a good connection to your current customer base.
    Again thank you! :)

Loving the game, and the look of the next entry already intrigues me. I have a compliment and a bug fix request.

Compliment: In my opinion, what y’all have done uniquely well in BB is in creating a strong theme through the gameplay and mechanics. Making a good tactics game is impressive. Making a good tactics game that also reinforces the theme and immersion with every mechanic, AI quirk, etc? Very very impressive. Can’t wait to see how this tendency plays itself out in your future titles.

Bug fix: Has the bug where the party actually moves faster on the overworld at the higher speed setting than at the lower speed setting been fixed?

Yes, 5 years is too long and I understand your position – at least we have one good game :)
And also you can come back to this game/world at any time and I think a lot of people will wait a continue of the story.
Or may be next game will be excelent and consist of all best parts of BattleBrothers.

I spent $50 on the supporter package not only because Battle Brothers is one of the best games I’ve ever played, but because of the amazing potential for future updates and expansions of the game. I know I shouldn’t have made assumptions, but I was quite glad to pay extra in expectation of many updates down the road to flesh out this amazing game.

I’m absolutely crushed to learn that you’re giving up on this great game. Why even have a supporter bundle if you knew you were throwing this game away? Now I’m supporting a developer who can’t even support their own game.

Ugh. I love games, I hate developers.

It’s a damn shame, but I still love the game for what it is.
The tale of the Invincible Wayfarer’s Legion, one that was only possible thanks to Battle Brothers, will long live in my heart, and will prob. live on in my DnD campaigns.

I shall look forward to your next game!

Hmm, the sales number must have been disappointing for the devs to move on to the next project. I was hoping for expansions to flesh out the base game. Oh well.

BB is a high quality indie title but 5yrs in development is expensive and there’s been hardly any marketing efforts beyond youtube let’s plays. There are surprise hits (FTL) and there are games with extremely long legs (Minecraft) but 99% of games simply can’t sell in large numbers based on quality alone.

    Wow.
I just found this game and was enthusiast about it. Was waiting for new content. I read about the “battle sisters” idea and looked forward into it too. Then read this, it makes me a little sad.
I respect your decision and will surely get your next game, but please consider mod support, DLCs or a Battle Brothers 2…I think it would be a great tabletop RPG-Wargame as well.

    Hi there,

I can only agree to all the other people. You should not just stop here. You should let your game become a legend. Make a heroic ending. Let it become immortal!

You should make AT LEAST 1 DLC and you should open somehow mod support to make it live forever.

Here is a very simple DLC idea which you can create in under 2 or 3 weeks.

Implement a castle with a king and a queen who have a beautiful princess. All three are travling all the time and must be protected. Goal is to make the princess fall in love with you (or with one of your BB).

    Done!

Strech that story over 1000 days and you have an addicting DLC because a lovestory always attract everybody all over the world. Everyone likes to go for that princess. 99% of the player of BB are male anyway!

I draw you a castle in 1 day. I draw you a few more characters on the second day and I write you a streched story in 1 week. Let’s say you need all in all 3 weeks. What is 3 weeks for an amazing DLC?

I don’t know anything about programming but if it is not too hard, you should somehow try to open mod support, which would let the game live for the next 10 years!

People will make crazy mods which let new people buy the game only because of the mod. You might even sell your game more times because of the mods than you already did without a mod.

If I were you, I would think about 3 super cool and very simple DLCs and also mod support to make the game become a legend!!!

    Think about!

Sadly, 5 years of work, excellent prospects, it could become a cult game that would have lived for ten years.
But without the support of mods – all this is doomed to death and oblivion in a year or two.
Why do not you give the sources to the community? I’m sure there will be a lot of enthusiasts who would make mods/localization support.
Do not let your work get lost.

Awesome game and thanks for the great updates, bug fixes, and content updates along the way. I fully support your decision to move on to a new project and hope that we can see the same level of communication and consistent updates moving forward! Hopefully in a shorter development time frame now that you guys are more experienced!

Don’t let the vocal minority of people enjoying the game dampen your efforts or accomplishments. Not sure why people just can’t be happy that an Early Access game actually had consistent updates AND actually became a full game. Not sure if I’m missing something, but I got exactly what I was promised and I couldn’t be happier.

    Good luck and great job!
