Dev Blog #63: Progress Update – Map, Faction Leaders

Time is flying by as the settlement screens get finished and we move on to work on the actual map part of the worldmap. Let’s take a closer look!

What’s been happening?

The settlement screens are done for now, so we’re moving on to polish the worldmap assets. Just like the settlement screens, those, too, had initially been done with placeholder images and are now receiving their final look. Below you can see how the central buildings of settlements, the same ones you previously saw on the settlement screens, look on the worldmap now.

At the same time we’re implementing more faction mechanics and contracts. All factions in the world of Battle Brothers now have a number of characters leading them – family members in the case of noble houses, and influential citizens in the case of settlements. Although those characters don’t have the depth as in a true rpg, we do feel that giving faces to the factions really helps to have them come alive.

As factions give out contracts, you’ll be dealing with individual characters that negotiate with you and to whom you report after all is said and done. You’ll potentially be working with them on several contracts, and they can also become part of contracts themselves. You may be escorting them, you may fight alongside them on the field of battle, or you may even be hired to kill them after having worked with them for some time – in which case they’ll permanently depart from this world, just like your conscience.

The above shows part of the new ‘Factions & Relations’ screen where you can at any time get an overview of the factions in the game, their leading characters, and your relation to them. Factions, too, come with a bit of procedurally generated backstory depending on their traits and values, in order to give you an idea of who it is you’re dealing with. If we find the time, we’ll also add some more clothes and hats suitable for nobility.

Another great update! Unfortunately a little short. I would love to get more insight, but surely you don’t want to spoil the first experience of playing, by revealing all new content in detail.
While reading I noticed, that the landmark this noble house has built its fortress at, unlike all other names in the game, has an english proper name.
Have you considered to give such landmarks or remarkable landscapes also nordic(/german) proper names?(If so, what was the thinking behind the decision to not do it?)

PS: Have you read post #2 of the thread(link below), containing some more ideas? Since you haven’t responded to post #6 yet, I assume you did not. I hereby would like to spotlight them again.

We’re still trying out different things to give the land the game plays in more of a cultural identity and be less generic fantasy, while at the same time keeping things pronouncable and clear for English speakers. Not sure whether region names specifically will change.

Yes, we’ve read your post. We generally read every post here and on Steam, but unfortunately we lack the time to reply to most.

I am trying to keep it in mind, and yet no answer leaves the impression of posts being not read.
Then thank you for taking the time to reply.

        So long!

each blog update feels like it takes longer and longer, simply because of the huge amount of hype I’ve been getting with each mind blowing addition to the update… I… I need this map update bad… you guys have made me more hyped for this than for XCOM 2… and that’s REALLY saying something.

Plunderable clothes and hats? Lovely… I mean what is the true motivation of a mercenary but to prance around in a dead blue-blooder’s clothing! :p

I’m going to slaughter all the houses… to prevent the Illuminati from ever rising to power in the future

I imagine and realize how much work you do and how much remains to be done, especially considering the effort and the seriousness with which you approach to the development of this beautiful game. This is very important and very difficult. But, honestly – you can even not imagine how it is REAL difficult for us – to wait next update :)

As always, I am extremely impressed by the work being done here! Great attention to detail, constantly delivering updates to keep us BB addicts on our toes, and plenty of fresh ideas every update as well! It is truly incredible to be able to see this game develop and I am always pleased by not only the timely manner in which I’ve received responses to my feedback, but also the professionalism I see in this company! Danke!!
