So… the game constantly gets more difficult. We know there’s some sort of scaling as you progress through it. But how does it actually work?

Rap said it wasn’t tied to renown – but then he also said renown does scale pay and the contracts offered, and both of those seem to be associated with difficulty, so who the heck knows.

Is it time? Is it number of enemy camps? Is it renown? Is it wealth? Character levels? Some combination thereof?

There could be major differences in the desireable way to play the game based on how this is determined, with some strategies unknowingly pitting the player against far more difficult enemy forces than others.

(Note well: This has nothing to do with the difficulty of any individual contract, mission, or battle, but rather than the overall baseline difficulty to which these adhere or from which they diverge)

Good thinking on creating a new thread on this topic!
Maybe now we will get an answer from the devs?

Seriously? Has no one replied with this yet? What has the internet come to?

I believe the difficulty is based on overall player kills.

The relevant factors, based on his response in the suggestions thread, seems to be

    a) Time
    b) The “strength of your roster”

So more guys, better armor and weapons, higher levels – all presumably increase the difficulty of the enemies you face.

As our wiki says – difficulty scales prices in towns, first money/tools/food and size of enemy bands, and amount bands/camps on map.

This is not what’s being asked. OP’s question is not about difficulty chosen at the beginning of the game, which your answer explains. The question is, what in-game factors cause the world and enemy armies to become more dangerous.

Allow player to manually lower renown equivalent.

Difficulty of contracts, non-contract locations and roaming parties scales differently. Contract difficulty scales with time, the strength of your roster, the difficulty rating (skulls), the type of contract, and some factors specific to the type of contract – for example, escort contracts are generally more difficult the longer you travel, as it increases the chance to run into enemies. Contract reward also scales with the difficulty rating (skulls) of contracts, which is why it offers some indication as to the contract difficulty.
