So I’ve been playing my max level brothers campaign for a while, just taking on the biggest baddies and as a result I hadn’t played a new campaign in a while. So I have not had a need to level up brothers. But now with a new campaign I’ve noticed that the level up stats are set, no randomness anymore. Which I like. The numbers used are the average of the max and min of the previous random system. So in effect, through the law of averages nothing changed. Except for melee attack. It’s increase of only +2 forces any bother who hopes to have any melee proficiency to take this skill at every level up and gimps it quite severely with ranged attack and makes any experienced brother a no-brainer late game trade out for Hedge Knight and other natural warriors. Is this a playtest balance thing?

As far as I can see is temporary but who really knows.
Current system is no fun in log run even if working and predictable.
Preferred much more randomness of old backgrounds and stat growth. It was more enjoyable and allow some unexpected guys grow strong. Now its only few vial able backgrounds for End Game Dream Team.
Devs promise to rework whole stat and perk system and seeing how they mean business I hope they will do it and do it well. But we will see.

considering how well they’ve done on the first pass they’ve definitely earned my patience to sit and wait for the new system.
Just wish I could hex edit and find that +2 skill increase and change it to +3

People used to reload game just to get the higher stat values, you see. Static stat gains gets rid of the need for those shenanigans, which I appreciate.

Static figures at improving this is clearly a temporary measure. This forum and steam I’ve seen a lot of great suggestions how this can be changed in the future. Some very interesting and difficult- I do not think that “difficult” – it will stop the devs :), just as long as they are busy with other.

It’s a single player game. If there was a multiplayer element I’d have an issue with people reloading their saves to get better stats but since their chosen route doesn’t affect my play experience I don’t understand why this “exploit” needs to be fixed

    +1.

People will find ways to abuse game mechanics in single player games to cheese the system. This wasn’t a bug; it was just good ol’ fashioned traditional “save scumming.” If players don’t reload for better stats, they’ll still reload to get the best possible mercs before entering a town for the first time (as that’s when they spawn – I tested it), or they’ll reload battles to get the best possible result.

Anyway, long story short: it wasn’t an exploit any more than loading the game in any other given circumstance was. While I don’t like loading the game for stat rerolls, I don’t think the stat rolls made the game unbalanced.

There are some good things about not having rolls (like consistency in stat layouts), but it doesn’t have the same zang that the old system did. I’m looking forward to the revamp of the system when it comes. Hopefully, Brothers’ backgrounds will influence what stats level best or something. (Wildmen getting lots of fatigue? Hedge Knights getting lots of HP? Sellswords getting good Melee and Ranged attack on level up?)

One thing I’d actually love to see is every stat being leveled up a little (because who the heck actually chooses initiative, really?), but being able to choose a few stats as a “focus” for that level that gets a better increase than the others. This might require rebalancing of enemies, though.

Yeah they said they removed it because it won’t work with their new perk system. The perk system however isn’t going to be revised any time soon, so I don’t see why they’d take that away. It severely dampened my will to play the game. It was enjoyable before, but now there is no point in picking up an early hedgeknight as he will hardly have better stats then a farmhand in the long run. Only in the end game you can start swapping out, but that’s a bit pointless in my opinion.
