Getting Heads for Patrols despite Retreating

As the title indicates, it would appear that we are collecting heads for kills despite having to retreat from the battlefield.

Just ran into this by sniping an Orc Young while running off the side of the map, since there were a blob of Warriors.

Not sure if this is intended (by somehow running back to the battlefield and collecting the head after the roaming enemy group leaves).
