    During a caravan defense contract battle, donkey and default guards count towards the normal:indebted ratio, triggering the unhappiness penalties that caused my men to leave after the battle.

    No, only your own men ever count towards those numbers. Note that you need to have more indebted than non-indebted. Equal numbers also make your men unhappy.
