How many roles can or will players play in Battle Brothers?

For what I know, we can play as a group of merchants(although there is short on skills, special missions and story lines for playing as a merchant) or a group of mercenaries.
So can we have more roles to play in the current version of the game? Or will we have more roles in the future? For example, treasure hunter or a vassal.
BTW, why don’t we have a main character in the game?
