Give the player the ability to assign a few ranks among the brothers. I won’t suggest the titles, as I’m too lazy to do the proper research of what would be true to the period.

    Mechanics:
-You can only assign a limited amount of rank (example: max 3 Sergeants, 1 Captain, etc).
-Certain ranks cannot be assigned until the brother reaches a min level (Can only be assigned Captain at level X).
-The ranks provide morale and possibly other bonuses to that individual brother, and nearby brothers.
-As a trade off, their death or rout can have a big impact on morale.

Will add that company banner would fit perfectly to ideas which stated Kalanar. In Middle ages banners were super important to tactical management on the field and thez has a huge impact on moral.

I would worry that adding the banner would take up valuable hands that could be holding large axes instead :-). If the scale was a bit larger I think that wouldn’t be a bad idea though, but you may be able to make the same argument against ranks.

The utility tree already does this rather well with the Captain, Rally the Troops and Inspiring Presence perks. You can then assign those mercs ranks to match their envisioned role by changing their nicknames.

That’s a good point. Can always rename a character as “Captain [german name here]” if you wanted. I haven’t been able to put in enough hours yet to have a character that high leveled! So I’m not very familiar with the utility tree yet. Been working too many 14 hour days since Early Release! So instead I just watch the lets play videos and read the forums during my 14 hour work day :-).

It’s one of the things that I really like about this game – you don’t need a Berserker or Captain class, you can just make your own. Makes things feel more natural and not arbitrary like most games.
I feel you, 14 hour works days are a waste of time and the signs of deluded management. The game will most likely eventually get a DRM version, so if you have a spare lappie you’ll be able to play on that without having steam traffic tip someone off. :P
