I have a suggestion to improve consistency and readability in combat. I’ve noticed that all the status meters (Health, Armor, Morale, etc.) start out full and decrease when damaged, except for “Fatigue”. I’d like to suggest renaming “Fatigue” to “Stamina” and have it work like all the other stats. The Battle Brother would start combat with full Stamina and it would decrease as they get fatigued.

This sounds like a good idea and really more in line with all the other stats.

The first time I played the battle demo I didn´t get it at first until I reread the tooltips. So from my point of view wesleyshaver´s approach would be more intuitive.

    "I am a Paladin!"
    >OMG, Malthus, there are no damn paladins in Battle Brothers...<
"OK, OK! Then I´m a wrecked down minstrel drunkard pretending to be a paladin, singing so wrong in the midst of battle that even the undead run in fear... Better?!"

That’s a good suggestion, thanks. We’ll discuss it again at our next design meeting.

Although I can kind of see how that might be more intuitive and aligned with the other stats, there’s a certain thematic elegence in the idea of the battle brothers accumulating fatigue. I also feel it lessens the purely mechanical feel of the stats, as you’re no longer just looking at a group of bars going down, but thats probably purely personal preference.

Yeah. I mean, it was a conscious decision to go with fatigue over stamina. It’s not like doing it the other way never crossed our minds. A chief reason was a better differentiation between the action point resource on one hand and the fatigue resource on the other. The way it is now, just by having one work backwards, they feel all the more different, and as you put it so well, fatigue has that certain thematic elegance to it. Nevertheless I’m of the opinion it’s worth re-examining this in light of how the game has evolved.

I vote for the change to Stamina. Visual consistency is very important to interface design. Having one of your bars work differently from the others is not improved design, IMO. It’s distracting, and assuming that 95% (99%?) of your customers have played a computer game with stat bars before, they’re not going to need to have Fatigue differentiated from the others.

Personally I find how the fatigue bar fills up quite helpful, to me it stands out more as the battle progresses and all the other bars deplete. Having all the bars do the same thing may camouflage them a little.
