I was hoping someone could give me some tips, maybe what backgrounds, typically have good range skill? Preferably some of the more affordable early game types but all advice welcome.17. May 2017 at 09:39 #21965NiteParticipant
poacher=bowyer=witchhunter (+5 range skill) < deserter (+10, but lower resolve) < hunter (+10) <=sellsword (+10 and some other bonuses) as i know. But there is some base stat range, so it’s common to get poacher better then hunter sometimes etc. So Try get 55+ base skill with 1-2 stars at least, or 50+ with 3 stars. In average 1 star means ~5 points at level 11, so 60 skill with 0 stars is equal to 55 skill with 1 or 50 with 2.
At start you can try poachers – they are pretty cheap and bonus is good enough. Anyway, i think you need crosbows until you reach ~75 skill to use quickshots with near the same accuracy, so archers are better to pick up in midgame, when you can equip them with basic xbows and then with warbows.17. Poachers tend to be the most affordable ranged specialists. Their ranged attack tend to be somewhere around 45-50 range.
Bowyers are probably next. They have similar stats to poachers but in my experience they tend to be slightly more expensive to recruit. Sometimes you can get cheap one however and they have potentially good event when they build you a very good bow (or very bad one).
You may try your lack with Gambler, they have good initiative and ranged defense but tend to lag behind poachers in ranged attack.
The more expensive ranged backgrounds are Witchhunters (ranged attack at par with Poacher but better resolve), Deserter (good for hybrid builds, but lack resolve), Sellswords (best all around background in game but very expensive), Raiders (good all around background, but ranged attack tend to be in 40-45 range). Best ranged specialist in game is Hunter, he tend to have highest ranged attack but falls behind in other fields so it’s best utilized as a pure ranged specialist.
That said, you should always look for talents. If you can find Militia or Caravan Guard with 40-45 ranged attack and 2 or 3 stars in it, you got yourself very good candidate for hybrid build (crossbow/polearm for example).
Also if you have a more then one poacher and/or hunter in your party, they can trigger event when they hold competition -for expending 30 ammo they will both gain 1 skill in ranged.17. May 2017 at 12:36 #21969hruzaParticipant

If that’s based on Wikipedia, then it’s outdated info. It have being changed: http://battlebrothersgame.com/dev-blog-49-progress-update-character-backgrounds-visual-makeover-continued/26. May 2017 at 16:52 #22027IociParticipant
sometimes i get beggar-like figures with 3 star range skill, but its hard to level them up. i used to use poachers to be my range guys, but later most of them were left with a javelin bag. hunters are better choice, not all of them have potential of shooting an arrow, but they comes with a good bow, its pretty nice in early game, specially when no bandit marksmen drop you the right weapon.
