Love GunParticipant
Ah, there you are!
Happy New Year!
Love GunParticipantHey Paul,
here some oddities I noticed recently:
The settlement screens do look cut off at the sides, (the link below each picture shows it in a bigger size)
while other screens do have a wood frame of sorts (, since there is always left some space to the edges);
or in the case of the inventory screen even a metal frame to round off those screens.
And why actually is it that only the inventory screen, among all screens, is framed by the statues? Why not adding them to all screens, when they don’t fill all the monitor screen?
I think the statues would do a good job to conceal that harsh cut at the settlement screens. What do you think? Here a crude photoshop edit as an example:(Looks like I didn’t scale the cut out part big enough, since the metal frame from picture beneath is visible.)
Another thing I noticed:
How come the village screen and the inventory screen don’t have the same size? I thought the size of those screens is supposed to be the size of the smallest supported resolution?Love GunParticipantHey Paul,
very nice, as always!
At 0:35 you have added the wrong text to the picture. ;P
The lost-screen looks like an inside job. ;P He must have been striked down by friendly fire.^^
I don’t recognize that guy’s armor. Does that mean we will get an additional armor for our mercs?^^
Come to think of it, shouldn’t the “campaign lost” screen better depict many striked down/dead humans, since it is necessary that all the squad is killed in order to lose the game?
If you would like to fix that, I think a “cool” and “easy” fix would be, to have an already dead human’s head or limb in the foreground, instead of the grass; and maybe some more scattered weapons, to give the impression that, outside of the scope, one would see a battlefield. Right now one is prone to think, the depicted person was shot on the run and is about to die all alone. Some ideas unrelated to the points above:
What if the downed guy would also spit some blood? I would like that. In my opinion, it would emphasize even more, that this guy actually hasn’t given up yet, that his will isn’t broken yet, but his body, that the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak, so to speak. As for the ruined buildings, what about adding stains of fire damage to some of the windows or the holes in the roofs? But then again, if there would have been fire, then most likely the whole building would have burned down, unless the residents would have extinguished the flames in time.
Love GunParticipantBy the way, that video gave me an idea: What about an unique “boob plate” armor for our brothers to wear?
I’d be careful with this stuff. The whole “women” topic is already pretty explosive. Let’s not wake sleeping dogs haha.
Very well then. (Though I still think, it would be funny to have one for our male mercs. But then again, that joke could get lost, as soon as, if ever, female mercs are implemented.)
Then this one will have to do the trick:
Edit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/4q9pmt/was_boob_armour_ever_a_real_thing/ (best comment)
What about “dresses combined with visable armour covering arms and head”? It would have less/no potential to offend anyone, but would maintain the joke. ^^
Love GunParticipantHere’s another video where I recorded all the zooms etc. It#s easier to follow what happens, but it can be difficult to watch.
…and may cause epileptic seizures. ;P
PS: Better turn off the music on this one.
If I only had followed your advice. I am now instantly willing to “order my jungle” (or whatever). (Come on, it isn’t really that bad. ^^)
These vids where produced as casual marketing material for Shards of War and have no educational value whatsoever.
In my simple, uneducated understanding, it would have had a higher marketing value, if it had also been educational – but what do I know.
By the way, that video gave me an idea: What about an unique “boob plate” armor for our brothers to wear? (An Easter Egg so to speak.) That would be funny. ^^
Build us a “boob plate” worthy ofMordorBattle Brothers.
Even if we don’t have a Dark Lord, we could have adragqueen! All shall loveherhim, and despair! ;PJust adding details
Generally, thanks for explaining those examples.
Adding the seam there was in particular one of the things I noticed that seem completely random to me; would have been fine without it. Why was it necessary to put a detail there, on that spot? Looks like you don’t know either. ;P Maybe that is one of the things that doesn’t really have a reason. ^^Love GunParticipantHey Paul,
thanks for taking the time to answer that extensively.Of course and I already did so, allthough its not for Battle Brothers. Its just a time lapse video for an artwork I did for Shards of War.
Painting TimelapseSome things I noticed while watching:
I think the time lapse is too fast.^^ Sometimes, when one finally notices, where you are drawing, you are already doing the next thing. Also personally, I would like to know the reasoning behind (some of) the actions. (e.g. at 0:20 you draw a part of her jacket buckle, and shortly after that you delete it, only to redraw it some time later (you also interchange the left and the right part of the jacket buckle, the reference shows it the otherway around); is the mirroring of the picture just a video editing shenanigan; at 4:02 you close the hole in the pants on her thigh; at 4:09 you add more seams to the jacket)
And one doesn’t have the slightest sense of time. How long did it actually take to draw the single parts and finally the whole picture? Would be nice to have some reference.
Love GunParticipantI wanted to put one in, but decided to cut it later.
Man, why do you always decide to cut the good stuff – just like the pipe-smoking merc from the sketch of the main menu background. ^^
Heres a sketch with the Nachzehrer in the very background
Interesting (that sketch poses more questions than it answers ;P), have you also done these placeholder “assets” (is that the correct term? ^^) or where are those from and what purpose did they originally serve?
Have you ever thought about recording (and maybe explaining/commenting a little) the painting process of one art piece? If it takes very long, it then could be made into fast motion video in between. This actually could have been a cool addition to this week’s blog.^^ Maybe this is an idea for a future one, where again the focus is on the art.
Regarding the Nachzehrer: I think, it might have been a good idea to let him be the aroar orc in the foreground on the left, drivelling and roaring so heavy that the spittle flies.
Back in the day we called the game “Terror from the Keep” and it was very heavily xcom inspired.
Cool pun. ^^
Another idea:
I recently read the Fangshire’s fluff text ( http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/260468244960658471/A63AE9C296B126091149522DAC7BAA283B676E3E/ ) and thought, since eyes (of enemies) can already glow red, why not make the Fangshire’s wearer’s eyes glow yellow in the night, just like the text suggests(, as long as this isn’t already a thing ^^)?Love GunParticipantCamp followers (like chirurgeons, smiths, scouts, etc.) were planned to be implemented.
Here followers are talked about for example:But like some other planned and even partly worked on features it was cut and will not make it into version 1.0.
For some more infos check this post (and the linked threads/posts therein):
http://steamcommunity.com/app/365360/discussions/0/215439774852655090/#c215439774852796985If the devs get the chance to continue work on the game beyond the release, I am pretty sure that camp followers are one of the features that then will be added.
Love GunParticipantDo you have Steam Cloud synchronisation enabled for Battle Brothers?
My guess would be that that’s the problem.
Give disabling that feature a try.In case you don’t know how:
Right-click on the entry of Battle Brothers in the Steam library > Properties > Updates > uncheck the box at “Enable Steam Cloud synchronisation for Battle Brothers”After you have disabled it, started the game, maybe loaded and saved your savegames, closed the game again, it should be possible to re-enable Steam Cloud without experiencing any problems anymore.
Love GunParticipantSounds neat. I’ll put it on my whishlist.
Cool.
By the way, awesome work on the new key visual!
(Although I desperately miss a “Fatso-Nachzehrer” there, it would have earned a prominent spot (;and Goblins are also not represented). They remind me of Dungeon Keeper’s Teufler(/Bile Demon) ^^)Love GunParticipantYour taunt was successful
^^
here’s something I did this week: reworking our Logo a little.
Very nice!
Is it only me or are the visible weapon parts not in a straight line, hence the weapons crooked/curved?An idea I had yesterday:
What do you think of a unique dagger (skin) made of a Nachzehrer’s horn/tooth/fang? Now that they have such big/long horns/fangs/teeth, I thought they would make a cool basis for a dagger.Love GunParticipantBeginning of next week I will get back to more frequent updates.
Let’s just pretend you posted that yesterday. ;P
Love GunParticipantI browsed a little and found: “chrēg” (= war; Old High German). (I think the plural form then should be the same as the singular form.)
In my opinion, it sounds good and goes nicely with the Orcs’ lore. For completion’s sake, I’d like to add that my suggestion means to pronounce the “e” short (, since I think, the thingy above the “e” is supposed to make the “e” pronounced long). So it can be spit with all one’s contempt like “Dreck”(in German) ( http://www.dict.cc/?s=dreck ), hence it would be written “Chreg”.
Regarding the names of the Orcs and Goblins. You are making a lot of cool suggestions, but the more I think about it, the less I am convinced that we can get away with just changing the names. These two factions are obviously Orcs and Goblins and it may even look silly if we try to give them some other name.
Kinda reminds me of Games Workshop calling the “Orcs & Goblins” “Orruks & Grots” in Age of Sigmar (I suppose some kind of copyright issue or smth?). I think its pretty hilarious…..True.
The “Ghouls” could be anything though, the classic ghoul is a nimble gangly humanoid, whereas yours are quite stout and demonic. So I’d resuggest something like “Carrion-Fiends”, or something more germanic/latin.
Though I like its meaning, in my opinion, “Carrion-Fiend”‘s ring is too slick and not edgy enough.
Paul,
I’d really like to know what name you (guys) gave them. ^^
However that be, have you something new to show? It’s been a while, since you did.Love GunParticipantHow about “Vordern Legion(s)”?
Yes, “The Vordern Legions” sounds good to me.
I’m still stumped by Orcs and Goblins, though. Maybe “elf” … I don’t know how to do umlauts, and I’m sure this one is wrong, but I remember a cool song about the Elfking. “Erl” or “Orl” … but those aren’t right, just a bad Anglicization of the sound. When I think of Scandinavian or Germanic elves, the impression is more of a goblin-like creature.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erlking
“According to Jacob Grimm, the term originates with a Scandinavian (Danish) word, ellekonge “king of the elves”, or for a female spirit elverkongens datter “the elven king’s daughter”, who is responsible for ensnaring human beings to satisfy her desire, jealousy or lust for revenge. The New Oxford American Dictionary follows this explanation, describing the Erlking as “a bearded giant or goblin who lures little children to the land of death”, mistranslated as Erlkönig in the late 18th century from ellerkonge.”The orcs could be seen as a type of Troll, is there any sort of word for a troll-like creature that would work?
I browsed a little and found: “chrēg” (= war; Old High German). (I think the plural form then should be the same as the singular form.)
In my opinion, it sounds good and goes nicely with the Orcs’ lore. What do you think of “arga-” or “argaz” (= cowardly, vicious; Germanic) or “argī” (= malice, avarice, greediness; Old High German) for the Goblins?
Paul,
I heard the Ancient Priests helmets are not lootable and wearable by one’s mercs. I think that’s a real shame and a waste of potential. Would it be possible to add their helmets on top of (rusty) mail coifs (or another fitting helmet) to make them wearable by humans?Basically like this:
This way one could have light helmets (wihtout the vision penalty) as fancy as the noble house knight helmets.
What do you think?Love GunParticipant“Mortuos Antiquos” eh… maybe, take your pick I guess, the germanic peasants and lords are the ones naming everything, and the saxon/celt/roman undead seem unlikely to provide answers as to their origin.
Based off that; “Alten-Toten” seems a bit more likely to me and has a ring to it, but I’m an ignorant Englishman and either one of those titles might sound totally lame to someone who knows the language lol.
True and true. ;P
Though I am personally fine with the faction name the “Ancient Dead”, what do you think of the “Altvorderen”(= ancestors)(Though I think it sounds better with its proper German noun marker: “die Altvorderen”) or “Vordern”(short form; probably the best suggestion, since it is catchy, german, but doesn’t really sound or look that way and it works with a “the”) or “die Verewigten”(= the deceased/eternalized/immortalized) or “die entseelte Legion”(and there you’d also have Latin) or simply “die Entseelten”(= the deceased, ~the ones, which souls have been taken away)?
