Actually our Kraken has a bit of a different backstory and is an inhabitant of swamps, rather than the sea. In our latest Blog Post there’s some more info on it if you are interested: Kraken Blog

Considering our Krakens habitat it would’nt really make sense to use any maritime symbolism.
In the case our our Banner the use of the kraken is just a symbol of strength, like a lion for example. I focussed on making it look like an intimidating banner a mercenary company would actually field. That’s why it is a lot darker than most of the earlier banners.
Up until now no mercenary banner uses any “makeshift” materials. This is important to disntinguish the banners of different factions and underline their character. The bandits for example only use makeshift materials for their standards.

I hope this explains a bit why the banner looks the way it looks.

    Cheers!

Thanks for taking the time to reply and providing insight.

It was just an idea. (Maybe those can be used, if you’ll ever create some more brigand banners; suggesting that those brigands originate from the coast or used to be pirates :) )
Could have been possible that the Kraken does have some brethren or distant cousins that dwell in the wide, unexplored oceans of Battle Brothers.

I totally forgot about the consistency of the designs.

    Hey Paul,

are you still around or have you fallen prey to your latest creation? ^^
Got anything to show? What are you working on at the moment?

My opinion on the kraken banner:
I am a little disappointed in the standard design. I would have liked it more, if it had been more of an original design, instead of an amalgamation of already existing designs of standards.
It should have been something special, especially since it is the reward for supporters.

    Some ideas:
Since the kraken is a creature of the sea a maritime design would have been natural.
The pole could be made of an oar,
    a figurehead

(A slimmer example; more believable for a battle standard)

or, even way cooler made of the tusk of a Narwhal

or the saw of a Sawfish.

The cloth could be eroded by sea water and matted with salt.
Further decoration elements could be, shells, dried seeweed/starfish/seahorse, corals, part of a fishnet, fishbones, teeth/the jaw of a shark or a fancy sailor’s knot.

    Hey Paul,

since each enemy unit usually does have three different visual versions, are there also two more for each of the regional variants of the Unhold?
Speaking of which, don’t you owe us two more visual versions of the Lindwurm? ;P

If there aren’t or won’t be any more visual versions of them, could the different regional variants be made more distinct?
Of course they all already have a different theme, but they all for example share the exact same eyes/eye color, upper teeth, shape of ears, nose and “double chin”.
I like the fact, that the Hill Unhold has tooth stumps instead of those carnassials the others have.

As the Unhold’s portrayal isn’t really capabale to convey their actual size, which is supposed to be three times the size of men; how about making it impossible to hit their head with melee weapons and deactivating the hit-chance-bonus due to height advantages against them?
On the same note, is the Unhold actually immune against being pulled, pushed, stunned, staggered and netted? The dev blog doesn’t say anthing about that.
If not, it should be, because it is way too big.

As I mentioned before I’d like to show some more, but I won’t spoil anything.

How can you be so cruel? ;P
I think now I know how this guy must feel:
    Defeat

    Nothing at all?^^
    Beggar

I can give you one little thing. The header graphic for the announcement is part of a bigger artwork I am painting for the main menue. We will see if everything works out the way we planned it, but I like it a lot already :)

How are the chances that it will feature a pipe smoker?^^

I see. Thanks for replying and letting me know.

What a shame. This masterpiece deserves to be finished!

Is it actually intentional that the man with the red cape, right in the focus, is adopting the pose of someone that has been crucified? Is there a connection between Jesus that sacrificed himself for all mankind (or however it is stated in the Bible) and this mercenary band that sacrificed itself for someone else, was true to its word, trying to fight a battle that they probably knew they were not able to win, but did so nonetheless?

Maybe you will have the time to finish it eventually. At this state, it does not make for a good desktop background, since one can see that this is not the finished state and cannot really pretend that a darkness is coming and consuming what is left of that company or something like that. I tried to cut out the polished part of the painting and set that as my background, but that isn’t working well.

Maybe it would be nice idea to polish some of those execellent paintings and revamp them to be a sort of “advertisement wallpapers” by adding the Battle Brother logo like it has been done for the key visual.
I assume there will be a new surge of LPs, reviews, general press coverage, etc. when the game will be released. Then those guys would have some more eye-catching art to present.

EDIT: One more thing, will you paint a new Battle Brothers desktop icon? I think it is pretty much the only thing that hasn’t been overhauled yet. ^^

Regarding more versions of helmets, I have to point out that it#s not just me painting items and they appear ingame. Every helmet requires some programming and quite a bit of game design work (rarity, stats, description etc).
So for now I have to go back to finishing other tasks, namely some more event pictures for the late game crises to create the proper atmosphere.

    I’ll keep you updated,

    Cheers!

    I understand.

Something completely different, could you please upload the finisehd version of this event picture?

I think, it would be a wonderful desktop background.

I managed to squeeze in these hats, yay!

    Cheers!
    hats

    Nice!
I hope, one will be able to hear the bells jingle every time a merc/unit with the juggler’s/jester’s hat moves a tile. ^^

Every time a head, protected by that hat, is hit, it should also jingle.

I do like the special hats like the Straw Hat and the Cultist Hood that provide more personality than the regular headgear usual for war. Now the problem is that those hats do not provide the protection to make them a viable choice later on.
That is why I loved how you guys created a Cultist Hood’s version for midgame. I would also love, if you could do the same for the Straw Hat and now the Fool’s Cap(Jester Hat), too.
Could you paint a version of the Straw Hat that does have a metal helmet underneath, similar to what you did with this hat?

Additionally, could you also paint a/several unique version(s) of the Fool’s Cap (with a metal helmet underneath for lategame) that can have different facemasks each depicting a different mood(like the ones you already painted for the mood mechanic) e.g. euphoric, angry, sad?

Maybe these serve as a good source of inspiration:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cap_and_bells

Perhaps someone even went so far and just attached real donkey ears to a helmet or just wears the skin of a donkey’s head on top of his helmet.

The pipe is back! rejoice :)

    *rejoices*

    Excellent work!

Though I have to say that this golden necklace does not look good in combination with the coat of plates.

It may also be a funny idea to add the direwolf stole (of the direwolf armors) to the mix of the noble/questgiver attire.

This is stated on the Steam store page,
“For all editions, please take note that both the soundtrack and the lore book are not yet done and will only be delivered once they’ve been finalized. You can expect them to be done at around the time the game leaves Early Access.”

Nice! I did not expect to get some more weapons.

Since the Rondel was a unique dagger skin, does it mean you have created a new third dagger skin or are there only two now?

Anyway can you bless us poor souls with some high quality daggers?

Your wish is my command :)
Just kidding, was working on these anyways!
