OldGreyBeardParticipant
Sweet. Well, in the US, it’s election season … maybe it’s their caucus, or convention?

OldGreyBeardParticipantYeah, that would work. Or rather have an additional “Trainer” perk for Swordmaster / Retired Soldiers. Again, RANDOM.

OldGreyBeardParticipantI like this idea. No matter which direction you approach from, you always start in the southwest corner, and behind the defenders. Military history is rife with examples of where the “day is saved” by the surprise flank/rear attack by unexpected allies. Maybe it’s not doable, but it would be sweet.

OldGreyBeardParticipantThere has to be some sort of provision for this. I’ve had several battles where a brother will come out with a 0% armor value. It seems to be a factor of the type of armor, and protection value.

OldGreyBeardParticipantThe best all around strategy I’ve found (stolen from these forums, actually ;-)) is to only hit the little creeps at night. It reduces the chances of a poison arrow, and once you get close enough, even a low level brother can do pretty well. If they nerf the rotten scumbags, it would be too easy to just steamroll them. Especially when you finally do get brothers like Sarissofoi has! ;-)

OldGreyBeardParticipantI asked the same thing a few months ago. It will be in a later build! :-)
It was very annoying when the only option to move the map view was to click and hold! Can’t tell you how many times I would dance around a troops as I slid the map instead of clicking on the target. The “move map by edges” feature in the latest builds really helps that!

OldGreyBeardParticipantYou have a tree directly south of you, and a shrubbery directly to the southeast. If you look carefully, you’ll see that there are a couple of hexes to the southeast that are attackable. It looks like everything’s normal to me.

OldGreyBeardParticipantIts basically a design decision you have to take (similiar to the floating damage numbers issue)
… and IMHO, it’s a VERY GOOD design decision.
This is a game about running a merc company, not a TW game of world conquest. There are already plenty of those about.
The recruitment phase does a reasonable job of emulating the hiring process anywhere. You make the best decision you can with the info you have. If the guy is going to be total dead weight, take his salable equipment and fire him. If you can’t afford to fire him, you make do, just like real life. I’m rather attached to this system. I think the little tidbits introduced in the new update are just about right.Stand your ground, guys! ;-)

OldGreyBeardParticipantWell, if you can get the Goblin leader crossbows, they work great on Orcs. Not only do they do more damage, but they will knock them back one. I never tried 12 crossbowmen, but as vital as they are to my tactics, I may try that out sometime. As I often use throwing axes, most of my mercs end up w/ half-decent ranged, anyway. Once I got a crossbow, I stopped using regular bows. The hit chance is just too low. A crossbowman with “bullseye” can be downright scary.

OldGreyBeardParticipantyeah Heroes 2: Best game ever (maybe except UFO: Enemy unknown)
UFO: Enemy Unknown – Still one I play often … and still dread meeting Chryssalids in a Terror Mission!
Back to the present:
I think the new map is amazing! The transition to night w/ the town lights getting brighter and brighter is such a nice touch! Excellent job. I haven’t run into any bugs, yet. Though I do miss the “a mission in every house”. I got very lazy where money management is concerned. It’s all coming together – good work, all!In a single player game, there's no such thing as cheating. It's merely "creative manipulation of the default settings"!
OldGreyBeardParticipantAnd last but not least a little teaser of something bigger I am working on
Cheers!
*starts singing:* “I see a dark sail on the horizon …” ;-)
You’ve done some marvelous work, Psen. Thanks!

OldGreyBeardParticipantNo need for a concrete example.
I dont promise it, but I will consider the skunk
Maybe some more in this direction:
Thanks so much, Paul! Just that you’ll consider it makes a very pleasant Christmas Surprise! :-)

OldGreyBeardParticipantHmmm … I think I pressed a wrong button somewhere. Looks like the images loaded w/o any commentary. :-\
Paul, if you need to have a heraldic skunk to work from, that would take some time. I’m not more than mildly artistically inclined, and as far as digital media equipment, the best I have is a trackball & MS Paint. If you think you’d need it, I’ll come up with something.

OldGreyBeardParticipantI think that would work well against bandits, and possibly goblins. Personally, I’d add 2 or 3 crossbowmen. I find the increased hit & damage make up for the slow speed & -1 hex range over bows.

OldGreyBeardParticipant(… are you sure you can’t squeeze a skunk into the merc banners? )
Now is the time to influence me I have not yet decided how the final mercenary banners will look like. In my mind I am exploring various styles. They have to sport a clearly distinct look compared to the noble house banners, but nevertheless should look authentical and in period.
So if you have any concrete suggestions to push me this way or another, just go
OK, here you go! ;-)
The Striped Skunk in all its glory! (As a heraldic animal, they would definitely be distinct from the noble houses!)
